Ofqual finalises Functional Skills criteria

Ofqual has released the final Functional Skills qualifications criteria for English, Math and ICT. Check out the full announcement here.

In Maths, three key processes are the focus:

  • Representing – selecting the mathematics and information to model a situation
  • Analysing – processing and using mathematics
  • Interpreting – interpreting and communicating the results of the analysis

The criteria can be downloaded from http://www.ofqual.gov.uk/files/2009-11-functional-skills-criteria-for-mathematics.pdf

Even if you’re not planning on offering the Functional Maths qualification, this is of interest, as “functional elements” will account for 20-30% of marks on Higher tier GCSE papers, and 30-40% of marks on Foundation tier GCSE papers.

Functional Skills qualifications in mathematics are available at Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2. Worth noting that a Level 2 qualification is equivalent to a Grade B, points-wise.

However, Functional Maths Specifications from the various exam boards have yet to be finalised. Current date for finalisation/accreditation looks to be March 2010. Your exam board will certainly be in touch on this, and we’ll keep you posted too.
